Week 11
This week I learned about how creative drama can be incorporated into classrooms. As a person who has a little bit of experience with theatre, I found this week's classes both fun and knowledgable. We learned how to incorporate creative drama into reading by incorporating statues, hot-seating, artifacts, teacher in role, narrative pantomime and person in a mess. These techniques can be used when reading stories as ways to keep students engaged in the story with movement, and looking deeper into the story and its meaning. These techniques also allow for the students and teacher to be creative and almost put themselves into the story. I really like the idea of using drama techniques as a teaching tool because I believe, as mentioned, it can keep students stay engaged as well as allowing them to be creative and dig deeper into the story. There is a big difference from just reading a book to children and not really asking questions and or analyzing the book throughout to actually diving deeper into the book and thinking of ways to be creative in allowing for students to comprehend better as well as have fun with the reading. Obviously, students love to be silly and oftentimes they also enjoy acting out characters and or other people. I believe creative drama can allow for this and also enhance students comprehension. These activities will allow for students to be more hands on as well as it allows them to get up and move. It will also help them to think critically when seeing things in front of them as well as possibly being able to ask questions about the reading.
The cool thing about creative drama is it can be used in a variety of ways as well as in a variety of subjects. Creative drama can even be used in math. For example, if you are working on a lesson about order of operations, you can give each student a number and or operation, and the students can move around to solve the problem by correctly ordering themselves in the correct order of operations. You could even. have them freeze as a statue after each step and or have some type of artifact and or teacher in role for them to better understand the lesson. Incorporating drama into math can not only get the students moving, but it may make it a little more fun and interesting by allowing them to move and or see themselves as the different numbers/operations.
I liked the examples you gave about incorporating drama into different subjects and how it makes it more fun and interesting for them.
ReplyDeleteI think your math lesson would be so fun for the kids! I have never thought f that and may have to try it in my future classroom
